Our Branch in Fargo ND writes.
Good first meeting. We have a plan in place and I'll be posting notes from our meeting here (facebook) soon. Some things we need help with asap include diaper collectors (to drive around and gather donations from the collection bins), phone callers (to gather information about local agencies to find where the greatest need is as well as to line up collection sites and our kick off event) and a PR/marketing person.

Congratulations to The Diaper Drive of Douglas County on their first large event this past weekend at the Alexandria Viking Plaza! The Rock-A-Thon for Babies raised over $500 and 1,900 diapers! Just amazing!!!

Thank you SO much to the mom's group of Woodridge Church! On October 5th they brought 13 volunteers to unpack boxes of newborn diapers at the warehouse...and 2,013 diapers came with them! Your time and donations are SO appreciated!!

As of 10/15/10 we have had 83,828 diapers donated to The Diaper Drive.

Yesterday, we had the opportunity as an organization to participate in our first expo at Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis! It was a great experience, and we had the chance to speak with SO many amazing resources all gathered in the same place! As many of you know, The Diaper Drive has a new volunteer onboard, Angie Thorson, who has generously agreed to take the lead on starting a cloth diaper "arm" of TDD. We have heard from many cloth diaper users, and many believe it could be a great enhancement to our program. Yesterday's expo included 3 cloth diaper manufacturers/services, and with their help we believe this can be a great success for us, as an additional feature to our disposable diaper collections!

Onward we go! We are now in the process of planning "Dinner for Diapers" which will take place July 29th in Minneapolis! We are hoping for a huge turnout! For more info on that see our website's "Upcoming Events" tab.

Today I was interviewed for a story on North Metro TV which will air for the next two weeks, starting Friday. Then tomorrow I'm doing an interview with Sun Newspapers. LOVE the exposure...HATE being the spokesperson. I'm not a glamour girl OR well spoken...making for media's LEAST likely spokesperson. Oh well. All for the cause, right?

Tomorrow night I am going on a tour of Dakota Woodlands Shelter in Eagan. Very excited to see all of the wonderful things they're doing there...and bringing them a stash of diapers! :-)

In the past couple days, we have been on KTIS and WCCO..and the word is getting out! I can tell, because I've been getting SOO many calls and emails! It's so wonderful. The unfortunate part about getting the word out is that most of the contacts I'm receiving are from people in NEED of diapers.
We need your help! Please contact us if you are able to get a collection started at your place of employment, church, school, or other gathering of people! The need is HUGE!

I also got a call yesterday from Twin Cities Live! They're going to publicize our next dropoff to Cornerstone in Bloomington on Tuesday! Keep your eyes open for it! :-)

Diaper Day a HUGE Success

Our First Annual Diaper Day was held yesterday...and it was wonderful! So many people were out and about and were SO generous! We collected over 2,000 diapers and lots of monetary donations. Wow!
The biggest part of all was that we were able to get the word of The Diaper Drive out to hundreds of people! So cool! Here are some pictures of the big day! :-)

Minnesota Visiting Nurses Association

Yesterday morning Jen Carbone invited me to attend the annual breakfast fundraiser for the Minnesota Visiting Nurses Association. I hadn't heard of them before. It was held in the Nicolett Island Pavilion in Minneapolis. Gorgeous. Mayor Rybeck did the welcoming! They're HUGE. And fabulous! And non-profit! They make hundreds of thousands of visits every year in the Twin Cities Metro Area, caring for teen moms from pregnancy through early parenting, alzheimers patients, immobile patients. Really across the spectrum. They help to keep health care costs low while providing IN HOME care for those who are sick and without the funding to pay for 1:1 care as they provide. Tonight we will be donating the first installment of diapers to Families Moving Forward. There are 373 diapers in the back of my van right now, as well as a huge pack of wipes and formula!
Families Moving Forward is a day center in Minneapolis, helping to serve those falling through the gap.

We will be in non-profit parking lots across the Twin Cities, asking the community to pitch in and help provide diapers for those utilizing crisis nurseries, women’s shelters, and emergency day programs.

Host your own Diaper Drive

Are you active in your church or other organization who might be willing to pull together for a great cause!! We'd love to support you in putting on your own Diaper Drive!!

1. Get your place of work involved.
2. Get your faith based organization involved.
3. Get your school involved.
4. Get your club involved.
5. Get your neighborhood involved.
6. Get your civic group involved.
7. Get a nonprofit involved.
8. Get your friends and family involved (throw a party).
9. In lieu of gifts or favors for weddings, birthdays, and baby showers ask for diapers.

Gain Support for Your Drive and Involve Lots of People

10. Teams and committees have more fun, and it will be helpful if you have someone to toss ideas around with. Ask for help.
11. Create a team based on those who show up to work early on a pre-determined day.
12. Offer your team members incentives for helping with the drive.
13. Bring your team to the Diaper Bank to learn more about the drive.
14. Invite the Diaper Bank to talk to your agency about how your drive will impact the community.
15. Provide diaper discount coupons to everyone (available online regularly).
16. Let your employees know by including a “diaper drive” flyer with their paycheck.
17. Send out local sale notices for diapers.

Set Goals for your Drive

18. Create a chart, or “thermometer” to track your progress.
19. Adopt a specific agency who is receiving diapers and set a goal to provide all their diapers for the year.
20. Set a per employee/person goal of 100 diapers (a one week supply for infants).
21. Set a goal to stuff the office or a company vehicle.
22. Stuff the boss’s office so they can’t even get through the door.
23. Build a structure using your collected packages: a house, a car, a baby buggy, a wall, or the “leaning tower of Pi-pee.”
24. Create multi-day donation surprise goals such as awarding individuals that give 1 package of diapers every day.
25. Set a poundage goal.
26. Run a year long drive where everyone is asked to bring diapers to a monthly meeting, and discuss what people paid.
27. Host a kick-off event to advertise your drive and your goals.
28. Have a raffle to set your goal using the digits on the ticket selected as the number for the drive.
29. Roll a dice to select the diaper goal.

Share Information about the Diaper Bank and the Diaper Need

30. Download information from the Online Diaper Drive Kit and post them around your office.
31. Create a Diaper Quiz (or use the one in the Online Diaper Drive Kit) that can be shared with drive participants.
32. Email daily facts about the Diaper Bank.
33. Post Diaper Bank facts around your office including the break room, bathrooms, and inside company vehicles.

Most people agree that basic human needs include food, clothing, and shelter, and many also include healthcare and education.
We know that children who suffer from a lack of food, shelter and clothing - including diapers - are at a distinct disadvantage and an increased risk of a host of problems, including neglect, abuse and lowered self-esteem.
Access to diapers is not only a basic human need itself, but also a need that, if not met, results in impediments to securing other basic human needs.

At our house we have lots of outgrown baby diapers, leftover from opened packs...if you have these laying around too, wondering what to do with them, we'd love to collect them! OR if you'd like to purchase a pack or two to give they would be soooo appreciated!

The Impact

In poor and low-income families, a baby can spend a day or longer in one diaper, leading to potential health and abuse risks.

Low-income parents cannot take advantage of free or subsidized childcare if they cannot afford to leave disposable diapers at childcare centers. If parents cannot access daycare, then they are less able to attend work or school on a consistent basis. This in turn leads to increased economic instability and a continuation of the cycle of poverty.

Without transportation, buying diapers at an inner city convenience store rather than a large retailer can double or triple the monthly cost for diapers. Many parents are already struggling to pay for rent and food and simply cannot afford the high cost of an adequate supply of diapers for their children.

The Facts

Safety-net programs such as the Food Stamp Program and WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) do not cover the cost of diapers.

An adequate supply of diapers can cost over $100 per month.

The vast majority of licensed day care centers do not accept cloth diapers, and require parents and caregivers to provide a steady supply of disposable diapers.
